I made my first quilt a few weeks ago! I have so many favorite fabrics from the ones I've gathered over the past few years, but there are only so many bags I can use. I wanted something useful for our home, that would make it easy to see all these patterns and colors that I love. So I dug up this tutorial I pinned ages ago (with no intention to ever actually use), and decided to try it out.
Once I got over my fear that nothing would even come close to lining up, it was a pretty enjoyable project (with the help of like fifteen Grey's Anatomy episodes). Once I had everything sewn together, the batting sandwiched, and my hand quilting done, I wasn't worried about the binding at all. And then I realized immediately I was scared of the wrong thing the whole time. Because my binding job is so, so wack. Especially on the backside. So enjoy these nice, not-to-close photos.
I do love this quilt, though. And the second I finished it and sat on the couch and covered myself up with it, I thought about making so many more really awesome quilts with all the fabrics I've ever loved. And then I thought about not doing that.
Looks amazing!!! I'm scared I don't have the patience to try quilting but it's on my to do list nevertheless!

i definitely almost lost my patience during this. when i was sewing the triangles together side by side, i accidentally inverted one of the rows. so it threw the whole plan for how i had laid them out and i had to improvise as i went and hope the colors and patterns were still spread out somewhat nicely. i seriously didn't think i was going to make it!
DeleteI'm still working on a quilt I started over a year ago because I'm so scared of what happens after I finish the top!
ReplyDeleteyou can do it! the binding wasn't that bad...i think i was just a little over it at that point and didn't fix some mistakes i should have along the way...oops.
DeleteIt looks so cute! :) Great job
ReplyDeleteHow nice!!

That looks so great! I'm going to bookmark the tutorial for when I make my own quilt someday. It's been on my to do list for way too long.
ReplyDeletedo it! the tutorial is super easy to follow.
Deletei'm pretty sure i have that pinned as well, but i did it again just in case because seriously. AMAZING. you did such a great job! i am sure that your mistakes are ones only you can see and no one else would ever notice. silly girl. ;] it looks SO good! i love the color pattern as well. it's kind of retro, without being like...grandma. because, sometimes that's cool. sometimes it's not. i just like it.
ReplyDeletegreat job, lady!
[also, thank God there are like 9 seasons of gray's! that's like....18 more quilts!]
thanks, larisaa! i was really happy with how all of the colors and patterns looked together once i had it all laid out.
Deleteand i know...when i started grey's, i was like, there is a long, amazing road ahead of me.
ahhhh! it looks awesome! quilting is super satisfying and addictive, just wait, I bet you'll make more! don't worry about the binding - the binding on my first quilt was pretty poor but that's just how you learn - you'll prob have the technique down by the second one :) liking the fabric combination btw!
ReplyDeleteI'm impressed! I've been wanting to quilt for a long time and I'm always so intimidated. Triangles like this are the pattern I would most likely try out - so it's nice to see someone else succeed at it.
ReplyDeleteCongrats!! It turned out so awesome!! With friends getting married recently and in the future, I've decided to make them a quilt as a gift. I know what you mean though, I have all of these ideas for quilt designs but little motivation. It's a lot of work!
ReplyDeletecongratulations on your quilt baby haha! it looks absolutely fantastic and I LOVE the colors! despite being a textiles student, i've never actually attempted a quilt, they've always really, really intimidated me just because they look so complicated! but you've inspired me to have a go :)
